ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERPUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENTDIVISION OF HUMANE SERVICES PET ADOPTION CENTERStarting Salary: Min $34,835.03 - Mid $43,212.85This is a full-time position which includes a full range of benefits including Paid Time Off, Extended Medical Leave, Holidays, Employee Health, Dental, Life, Disability, Retirement, and Tuition Assistance programs.JOB DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this position is to enforce the county animal ordinances, investigate animal complaints, and capture and confine dangerous, diseased, injured, stray and unlicensed animals, and educate the public about pet responsibility and ownership. The work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Animal Control Officer. Works as a team member with other shelter staff to ensure smooth day to day operations in the kennel, front office, and medical. Enforces county animal ordinances. Educates the public regarding regulations, pet responsibility, and ownership. Delivers vaccination tags and certification forms to veterinarians. Responds to animal and nuisance complaints from the public. Controls and impounds vicious or dangerous animals. Prioritizes and Investigates abuse, neglect, and nuisance complaints. Researches prior complaints, ownership of property, and location of complaints. Assists the public in solving animal related problems in the community. Assists other departments such as Code Enforcement, Social Services, and First Responders with various animal related violations and community problems. Prepares Animal Control related reports, including but not limited to: bites, investigations, prosecutions, and animal impoundments/field surrenders. Enters information and reports into a computer. Prepares potential rabies specimen for testing, completes bite cases, and transports to the Department of Public Health. Captures and removes at-large animals. Utilizing an animal control vehicle, patrols unincorporated and contracted city areas for at-large animals for a significant amount of time. Apprehends sick, injured, aggressive, and stray animals including domestic, wildlife, and livestock; transports to kennel or veterinarian. Picks up dead domestic animals on public or private property and dead wild animals on public property. Cleans Animal Control vehicles and maintains issued equipment. Maintains cleanliness of shelter, kennels, and grounds. Assists kennel staff with loading the incinerator. Provides animal care. Assists in sedating and euthanizing animals where applicable. Accepts and releases animals to the public. Evaluates and processes animals for adoption. Implants microchip in animals. Applies necessary flea/tick preventative/treatment, worms, and vaccinates animals per intake procedure. Participates in on-call duty on a rotating basis. Responds to emergency calls as required after hours. Works a variety of rotating shifts. Maintains knowledge of animal control techniques, best practices, and equipment operation including but not limited to tranquilizer equipment. Stays aware of current laws, regulations, and procedures regarding animal capture, handling, custody, and disposition. Investigates and builds cases for municipal and state prosecution. Carries out duties and investigations in a lawful manner; remains aware of authority regarding confiscation, right-of-entry, and exigent circumstances. Provides customer service while in the shelter and out in the field. Dispatches calls to other officers using a two way radio and computer. Answers questions from the public. Makes decisions regarding shelter operations including but limited to engaging difficult citizen complaints in the absence of a supervisor. Processes adoptions, and staffs public education and special events. Educates the public about pet responsibility, pet ownership, and the Humane Services department. Counsels potential adopters. Inspects boarding kennels, breeding kennels, pet shops, and pet grooming parlors. Writes detailed reports daily. Assists the Chief Animal Control O
